TZU CHI 111 17 upon returning home in the evening whenever possible, ensuring that her family’s needs are duly met. She also confessed to being ignorant of the suffering of the needy before joining Tzu Chi when recalling her first visit to a care recipient’s home where she was daunted by the poor hygienic conditions. The jarring contrast between the care recipient’s unkempt quarters and her clean, comfortable home evoked in her a renewed appreciation of her pristine living space and the harmonious family relations she has been blessed with. “Occasional quarrels with my husband are inevitable, but I would let my husband have his way and refrain from retaliating, instead of launching into a tirade like I did in the past. My temper has mellowed, and I have overcome my negative habits,” quipped Siew Giok, who has since adopted a more positive mindset. The relentless pursuit of material gains had blinded Siew Giok to her priorities in life. Now, she has learnt to let go of worldly attachments weighing her down and pledged to commit to vegetarianism. She is nowdedicated toher roles as mother and wife, as well as a trusty helper to Mee Hong, whom she admires for her forthright, no- holds-barred personality. “I’m striving to improve myself on all fronts, for we spend our lifetimes cultivating positive karma,” she declared, before adding that she intends to volunteer full-time with Tzu Chi in the foreseeable future.
