The world of Tzu Chi (Vol.111)
TZU CHI 111 13 instead. He dedicated himself to volunteering with Tzu Chi and has given up gambling since. Over time, he has also recovered from the loss of his wife. Even Yoon Hong himself was pleasantly surprised at the potential of Tzu Chi’s culture of kindness and compassion in turning his life around. “My current self is worlds apart from my former self. I never expected to undergo such a compelling transformation. For instance, my past self would have adamantly refused to attend a funeral, let alone perform rites at one. Even if I had to attend a funeral, I would resort to superstitious practices to ward off ominous spirits. But now, whenever I am called upon to perform rites at a funeral, I devote myself to the task with a sincere heart and a pure mind free of superstitions,” he shared. Both Mee Hong and Yoon Hong believe that fear has no place in the minds of those who are firmly grounded in kind thoughts, as testified by Mee Hong’s readiness in accepting Yoon Hong’s request to groom the appearance of his father who was then terminally ill. Yoon Hong’s encounter with volunteers with hearts of gold has restored his faith in the grace of humanity. He is now content with dedicating himself to upholding Master Cheng Yen’s spirit of compassion and embracing the Master’s legacy of selfless service. Yap Yoon Hong used to live in the lap of luxury, but has since resigned to a modest life committed to Tzu Chi and following the Bodhisattva Path.
