2019 • 05 06 Never losing sight of hope Leong Teik Hong has been bedridden for years due to his debilitating medical condition. Yet, struggling with a chronic illness has not deterred him from keeping in touch with goings-on beyond the confines of his house with the help of technology and Tzu Chi volunteers. He keenly looks forward to brighter days ahead, and counters adversity with his jovial personality and zest for life. By Tan Kim Hion Translated by Lee Hui Yieng Photograph by Lee Mun Keat O n a rainy night in 2003, I followed a team of TIMAdoctors to Teik Hong’s home for a medical consultation. My heart sank the moment I stepped into Teik Hong’s house and saw him bedridden. He appeared so thin and fragile, the contours of his bones were showing through his skin. The doctor was careful to examine his body as gently as possible, for fear that even the lightest touch would do him harm. He spoke energetically and laughed heartily despite his thin frame, sharing candidly, “No doctor was willing to pay me a home visit, until TIMA doctors came along and offered me free medical consultations. I am truly honoured by their sincere intentions to help me without expecting anything in return. Thank you, doctor!” His infectious laughter warmed our hearts on that cold rainy night. We laughed along, but at the same time, tears were also welling up in our eyes as we were deeply moved by his fortitude.
