The world of Tzu Chi (Vol.110)

49 TZU CHI 110 Master Cheng Yen: Tzu Chi does not get involved in politics. However, we respect life. Therefore, wherever a disaster strikes, we will try our best to help. I think this love will be beneficial to both sides mutually understanding each other. Journalist: There are still many problems in Taiwan and China that need to be addressed. Why does Tzu Chi provide aid internationally to other countries? Master Cheng Yen: I believe everyone should care for the entire world not just Taiwan. Should there be difficulties in Taiwan, Tzu Chi is ready to help as well. A few decades back, Taiwan also accepted foreign aid. Now Taiwan is very prosperous, and its people are willing to give their love to others. Therefore, if we are able to, we should also help other nations struck by disasters. Like the posters you have seen in our Jing Si Abode, nations such as Ethiopia, Republic of Rwanda and South Africa also need our help. As the most intelligent of all beings, humans should help one another. Journalist: Tzu Chi has grown into such a large organization; why did you start this Foundation in the beginning? Master Cheng Yen: Things are so unpredictable! In the beginning, I just did it out of love. This love has inspired so many, and I never expected it to grow so fast! I will do as much as I can to the best of my abilities. I just do the best I can. * This article is extracted from the book “Friends from Afar: Conversations with Dharma Master Cheng Yen”.
