48 2019 • 05 Serene Reflection Between Master Cheng Yen and International Reporters on Charity and Relief October 11, 1997 Journalist: Master, you have helped many people; do you believe that everyone does charity work as well? Master Cheng Yen: We are constantly working to purify people’s hearts and minds, and we do hope to inspire more people to participate in charity work. Journalist: For those who have received help from Tzu Chi, do you expect them to help others as well? Master Cheng Yen: I often encourage them to cultivate gratitude and to help others when they can. Journalist: I hear that Tzu Chi does not receive any financial assistance from the government. Why is that? Master Cheng Yen: The government does not provide this type of funding. But I hope that we, as a non-governmental organization can help the government by taking on projects that they cannot. Journalist: The projects you areworkingon, do they affect otherBuddhist organizations? Master Cheng Yen: They should not, because some Buddhist organizations make promoting the Buddha’s teaching as their main mission, but we are focused on charity work. Therefore, there should not be any conflicts. Journalist: Tzu Chi has provided relief many times in China; could this build a political bridge between Taiwan and China?
