Nuruddin, a longtime Bangladeshi resident in Malaysia, has four children with his Malaysian wife, Mapuza binti Shamsudin. Upon receiving a report from the children’s school that the family is in need of assistance, Tzu Chi volunteers conducted home visits to the family and discovered that they were in dire financial straits without a reliable source of income, as Nuruddin had been unfit to work while waiting for treatment to remove his kidney stones. The family was at risk of being evicted from their rented quarters as they had been falling behind on rental. The volunteers suggested that Mapuza apply for zakat funding and financial aid from the Social Welfare Department. In the meantime, the volunteers managed to secure an affordable rented apartment for the family. The financial aid applications were eventually approved, and the volunteers reassured Nuruddin that they would continue to offer emotional support by visiting the family monthly.
