During a visit, the participating volunteers were led by prison warden, Theo Adrianus, on a guided tour of the prison facilities. The volunteers noticed a small worship hall on the first floor that was in a dilapidated state, and proposed to have it rebuilt to provide Buddhist inmates with a proper retreat to practise spiritual cultivation and seek motivation to turn over a new leaf and rediscover their purpose in life. The ground-breaking ceremony for the prison’s worship hall was held on January 7, 2019, officiated by the symbolic gesture of shovelling small mounds of sand to signify the start of the reconstruction project.
