The world of Tzu Chi September 2024 (Vol.151)

TZU CHI 151 27 language every Saturday was not only his way of giving back but also an opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience. As he honed his teaching skills, he grew even closer to realising his aspiration of helping children in need. A stable life “Once upon a time, in a distant farm, there was a buffalo named Ali. Every day, he diligently helped an old man transport recyclable items, taking it as its obligation and doing it with all its heart…” With handmade props, Chan Hong shared an educational story with some kindergarteners. Thanks to a recommendation from Tzu Chi volunteer Lim Chiu Chin, Chan Hong secured a teaching position at a kindergarten in 2023. This job provided him with a stable income, and he embraced his role with the same dedication as the diligent buffalo in the story. The kindergarten principal, Ong Huei Ching, commended him for his maturity and patience despite only being in his 20s, and his genuine care for the students. Reflecting on his experiences teaching different age groups over the past few years, Chan Hong expressed gratitude for the diverse learning opportunities. A dream fulfilled On January 28, 2024, during the Tzu Chi Charity Day, a beaming Chan Hong shared the news that he had been accepted by the Ministry of Education as a teacher. After more than a decade of persistent efforts, his dream had finally come true; many volunteers who shared his journey were overjoyed and deeply moved by his achievement. “I’ve waited for this moment for a long time; even though my path was longer than most, I’ve finally made it! The journey had been bittersweet with setbacks and having to wait patiently. But now things are turning sweet. I’m deeply grateful for the kindness of everyone who helped my family and me along the way. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today.” March 7 marked the day Chan Hong officially began his new role at SMK Krubong. As a homeroom teacher for Form 3 students, responsible for various subjects, he expressed his joy at having fulfilled his dream of becoming a teacher. With a grateful heart, he works diligently to ensure his students can fully grasp the lessons. “Being a teacher may not make me rich, but it offers stability, which is the life I want. I hope to teach the children well, help them understand life’s principles, and see them apply these in their lives. That will be my greatest achievement,” he said with contentment.
