The world of Tzu Chi December 2023 (Vol.148)

TZU CHI 148 17 medical bills when they fall sick, they choose to prioritise health and invest in bottled water, even with the associated financial burden. Unfortunately, with limited understanding of environmental protection and the absence of waste bins in the villages, they adopted the convenient practice of tossing the empty bottles into the sea. Was I silly? After two years of companionship and promotion by the volunteers, 14 recycling centre masters have been trained. Besides engaging in recycling activities themselves, they also promote the concept of recycling amongst their stateless communities. On the morning of September 16, 2023, 181 recycling volunteers from 22 communities gathered at the Tzu Chi Sandakan Community Centre. Everyone dressed up for the occasion, as they would for celebrations. It was a lively yet orderly scene, full of peace and joy. Three villagers were specially invited to share their experiences on environmental protection, while three recycling centre masters addressed queries from the participants. Interestingly, the audience did not raise questions about the difficulties they faced. Instead, they asked, “Could I get more hemp bags so I can collect more PET bottles?”, “Could I set up a recycling centre at my home?”, and so on. Their motivation was inspiring. Villager Sibar bin Sah narrated, “During MCO, my wife and I each submitted an application for supplies thinking that one of them would be approved. As it turned out, we received nothing. Half a year ago, Tzu Chi came to the village to promote recycling and encourage us to contribute to charity. I followed suit, collecting recyclables and getting 20 families to become donors. My friends laughed at me for being silly. Was I?” The audience smiled. Sibar continued, “Although I did not receive any assistance, I was happy to see fellow villagers transporting supplies home in carts. At such difficult times, Tzu Chi distributed huge amounts of necessities so no one would go hungry. I am with Tzu Chi. I can also become someone like Brother Kiing.” At the end of his sharing, the audience burst into applause and cheers. It was apparent that everyone agreed with him – that giving is more rewarding than receiving. That day, I was very happy Zubaira bt. Iris, a recycling centre master, not only attended the training session herself,
