The world of Tzu Chi December 2023 (Vol.148)

TZU CHI 148 11 event, and helped with cleaning at the Tzu Chi Kuchai Lama Community Centre and the KL Tzu-Chi Jing Si Hall.” More responsibilities but less worries Before the government lifted pandemic restrictions, Yoke Peng also arranged for Foong Yee and her children to join online parent-child bonding classes, and invited her to participate in fellowship activities, allowing her to settle her mind and gain a better understanding of Tzu Chi. Through these interactions, trust was gradually established. Foong Yee confessed, “Despite having the company of volunteers, the impact of the lockdown weighed heavily on my heart. I could not help but become irritable and lean towards negative thoughts. Yoke Peng noticed this and more actively invited me to participate in various activities to help shift my worries.” Foong Yee remarked smilingly that perhaps her emotions found an outlet for release, many accumulated grievances gradually diminished. “Especially during the home visits for the K1K3.0 relief programme, as soon as I stepped through the doors of the applicants’ homes, I recalled my own past when I sought assistance. I was profoundly moved.” Owing to her own experiences, Foong Yee showed empathy in her interactions with the beneficiaries. The hardships faced by families in greater need also reminded her that her situation was not the worst. The seed of kindness has sprouted Foong Yee shared, “During each home visit, apart from caring about the beneficiaries’ current situations, I would also listen to their sorrows and worries, but I looked forward most to hearing them share their moments of joy. It was only through this that I realise: helping others is truly a joyful endeavour.” Foong Yee revealed that during a visit to the hospital with her father, she spontaneously reached out to assist an elderly woman. In reflection, she realised that if it was in the past, shewouldmerely feel sympathy but not provide actual help. When she shared this with Yoke Peng, the latter remarked happily, “Foong Yee, this proves that the seed of kindness planted in your heart has sprouted! You must allow it to continue growing and spreading.” Despite a life that briefly plummeted to its lowest point owing to the pandemic, Foong Yee took to heart the companionship of the volunteers. In October 2022, she re-entered the workforce and is no longer in need of Tzu Chi’s assistance. Transforming from a beneficiary to a giver, she is lighting up her life and that of others, passing on the love she has received.
