The world of Tzu Chi Nov-Dec 2021 (Vol.138)
During the call, Mui Ling also shared with Alina her childhood experience. “When I was young, for many years I did not speak to my mother due to some misunderstanding. After communicating with her, we opened our hearts to each other, and I felt blessed to have a mother’s care. It is a pity that I had not had the opportunity to repay my mother’s love. She fell sick suddenly and passed away just 13 days after her diagnosis. This impermanence in life was cruel and hit me badly. I shared my past experience with her, hoping that it could be helpful to her and her husband.” Mui Ling encouraged Alina to be kind and to consider a vegetarian diet. Filled with gratitude for Master Cheng Yen and Tzu Chi volunteers, Alina was willing to learn about vegetarianism. Encouraged and motivated by the change and growth in Alina’s character, Mui Ling said, “In fact, I could see my shortcomings while doing volunteer work. I am very grateful for the Master’s Dharma as guidance, allowing me to constantly adapt and face every challenge with confidence.” Mui Ling recalled that sheonce encountered a refugee who came to ask for help. He sounded quite desperate, claiming that he and his family were about to be homeless as they were forced to move out by the landlord. When Mui Ling offered to talk to the landlord, he was hesitant as he did not want the landlord to know that they were seeking help from Tzu Chi, and would prefer Mui Ling not to contact the landlord. Later, Mui Ling learned that not only the landlord did not force the eviction, but he had been willing to help the family. “Whether it is a home visit or a telephone interview, we can see all facets of the human psyche. In such a situation, I try to put myself in their shoes; if I am very desperate for help, I would probably try to hide some facts, too. Therefore, taking on volunteer work requires one to have a good balance between rationality and sensibility. One must always have compassion, otherwise people will become more and more indifferent.” During each home visit or telephone interview, Mui Ling would make it clear to the beneficiaries that Tzu Chi’s donations come from the kindness of people, regardless of race or religion. “I would tell them, if you really need help, please also help the volunteers, trust the volunteers, and let their kindness reach the hands of the people in need and help them go through the difficult times. I believe that sincere communication is the key to move hearts.” Extending a Helpline of Hope TZU CHI 138 11
