The world of Tzu Chi June 2021 (Vol.135)

53 TZU CHI 135 * Extracted from the book “Infinite Teachings, Infinite Meanings”. How can we determine if our conduct is proper? How do you determine whether you have done the right or wrong thing? You have to ask yourself, after your actions, if you have a peaceful conscience and are free of regrets. If you have worked to help others, you feel good about what you did and others are supportive of it, then you can be rest assured that you have acted correctly. How can we deal with discontented people? Try to influence them with good teachings as much as possible. If you cannot influence them, then have sympathy for them. Contented people are happy; discontented people are actually suffering a lot. Being able to think of reasons to have sympathy for others is being understanding towards them. How can we stop trying to avenge evil and instead deal with people more gently? I also get angry. But as soon as I get angry, I turn my thoughts around by reminding myself to be accepting of everything. Sometimes, in the moment, I may wonder, “How can you do something like this?” However, I also trust that, “One day, this person will definitely change for the better!” Therefore, when angry emotions arise, we need to calm ourselves. Once we have calmed our minds, then we can speak gently to avoid hurting others or causing conflicts. Some people refrain from talking when they are angry, and instead quickly walk away in order to prevent conflicts. However, if we immediately turn and walk away when we get angry, it may also hurt others because they can feel our anger. Showing our anger is also a sign of a lack of self-cultivation. After all, is there really anyone that is our enemy in this world? We should practise self-cultivation and strive for a state in which there is no one in the world that we do not love.
