The world of Tzu Chi June 2021 (Vol.135)

33 humanitarian relief services. At the heart of all sentient beings is the ability to feel for others, that is, compassion. Most of the refugees are the victims of history and political factors. They have risked losing their own country and everything else, just to flee and search for a better future for their families. Many refugees have experienced the devastating pain of witnessing their loved ones brutally killed by militants. An emotional wound so deep that words alone could not suffice. The escape journey of most refugees is long and arduous, with limited shelter, water and food. They have no time to bid farewell to their families and they flee with few belongings as time is of the essence. Compared to the harsh reality of refugees, ours is a safe and peaceful country, where we enjoy all kinds of welfare and freedom. Besides having access to education, medical services, safety and shelter, we enjoy freedom to embrace and practise our culture and religion. For the refugee, it is turning a new chapter altogether. The scars of death, personal loss and war must fade with time. Memories of happy days can only remain a sanctuary to retreat, in desperate moments of loneliness and neglect. Anew chapter penned out of tears, fears and hurts must begin. A new beginning heralding fresh hopes, new dreams, and simple moments. As these individuals turn their pages, let us not forget that we, too, can do our part, and hear their heartbeats, help rewrite their stories, and rebuild a community anchored in faith, hope and compassion.
