The world of Tzu Chi June 2021 (Vol.135)
TZU CHI 135 31 volunteer interpreter. Usually, Fatinah has a cup of coffee before work except in the fasting month of Ramadan, when Muslims are not allowed to eat from dawn to sunset. “Thank God, I managed to keep to my fasting schedule during Ramadan. It was because my colleagues were helping me, and they really made my Ramadan easy for me. Dr. Foo Seay Liang, Sister Shirley and all my colleagues have been very encouraging and friendly. I have learnt a lot here and I hope to improve even more as time goes by.” On Mondays, Fatinah gets up early to do her morning prayers ( solat subuh ). Before going out, she does some simple stretches. Fatinah said she has been doing this for over a month as it keeps her fit and energizes her for the day. Finding meaning through helping Being a refugee is like charting the open sea without a compass. Some people end up on the streets, while others may meet a benefactor. For Fatinah, it is the latter. Helping fellow refugees has made life a little more diverse and meaningful. “Another great thing,” she added “is that I have started to cut down on meat in my diet due to the encouragement of my colleagues. Meat is not allowed in the Tzu Chi clinic, and frankly, I was not used to it. But as time went on, I realized that there were many options for a vegetarian diet. Gradually, I developed a sense of gratitude and started adding broccoli, carrot and other vegetables to my diet. I have also become more adventurous in trying new ways of eating.” Reflecting on her life in Malaysia, Fatinah feels she has grown a lot and is happy to be able to contribute to society. She receives a modest allowance for her contribution which enables her to support her family. “I am very happy that this voluntary work gives me some allowance; I am grateful for this opportunity to serve,” Fatinah beamed a broad smile. Refugees come to a foreign country to seek refuge, but due to their status, they are often unable to utilize their skills. However, at the Tzu-Chi Free Clinic, the feeling of being accepted and making a difference has helped them overcome life’s bitter blows, and most importantly, to experience inner peace.
