The world of Tzu Chi June 2021 (Vol.135)
TZU CHI 135 25 We ran out of food, and survival became more remote. Some people could not hold out any longer, and they succumbed to death. Like the waves that swelled, a zillion thoughts flooded my mind. I thought, “Is this my future? It is a terrible mistake to escape!” One hurdle led to another. We were prohibited by the Thailand Government from entering the country again. On February 6, we disembarked from Penang and were arrested immediately. After spending two months in jail and four months in a detention camp, I finally managed to receive a refugee card. Sadly, shortly after my release, I received word that my parents had passed away. I still miss my hometown Currently, my brother is making a living in Pahang while I work as a teacher in a religious school, thanks to my fellow villager. I was previously a religious teacher in my hometown. Life in Malaysia is certainly safer than my hometown. If you do not step out of line, you do not have to worry much. The worst thing that could happen to you is being arrested, but at least, you will not die. Back in Myanmar, we were not recognized and society there saw us as criminals. Although I do not need to worry about my safety here, I still miss my hometown. Malaysia is good but home is still the best. Like everyone else, I have a dream. I hope one day, the identity of the Rohingya people will be resolved, and I can go home. Of course, I also hope that our next generation will have the opportunity to be educated, to develop leadership skills, and to be a voice for our community. Looking back, life is not all that bad after all. I met my Malaysian wife in Malaysia and the good news is—she is expecting our first baby. At least, my children can apply for Malaysian citizenship and have their identity recognized. Even so, I still hope for the day when I can return home, and this time, with my wife and children. Wouldn’t that be a happy ending to a sorrowful tale? Or do fairy tales come true at all? I Was Told to Run, and to Run Quickly
