TZU CHI 125 17 daughter’s decision. She wiped the perspiration from her brow and declared, “I approve of the donations! Apart from earning an income for ourselves, we’re able to help others. I believe our kindness will be reciprocated.” Philanthropy has become an integral part of Saw Keok’s life. She joined Tzu Chi as a volunteer almost a decade ago and now spares time to serve in the kitchen of the Tzu Chi Taman Sentosa Community Centre in Klang, preparing vegetarian meal packs for charity bazaars with fellow volunteers. Kar Ling developed some new recipes with the support of her family, including a healthy multicoloured pasta dish and a vegetarian version of Taiwan-style red-braised beef noodle soup. The latter is made with Jing-Si noodles in an effort to promote the wholesome qualities of Jing-Si food products, besides providing a healthier option for her customers. Although most business sectors have reopened following the relaxation of MCO regulations in July, the travel industry has yet to recover due to restricted travel and closed national borders. Hence, Kar Ling terminated her office rental contract. “I still have to settle the rent despite the loss of income over the past few months. The landlord offered a rebate, but it’s not a long- term solution. When the business is back in operation, I’ll resume the contract or find another office space,” she disclosed. Kar Ling and her husband finally had time for lunch in the afternoon after delivering the orders. The pandemic caused a disruption to her business, yet unexpectedly led her to a charitable pursuit. She even formed friendships with some of her customers, prompting her decision to continue making and delivering vegetarian meals on weekends even after returning to her travel agency, sowing the seeds of compassion with her well-meaning intentions to promote vegetarianism. When Ong Kar Ling’s travel agency was forced to suspend operations due to MCO restrictions, she shifted gears and started delivering homemade vegetarian meals for income. Adapting to the Times
