He started participating in home visits, volunteering for nursing homes, emergency aid distributions, environmental conservation efforts and kitchen duties, which cultivated his patience and focus. Ablessed affinity with Tzu Chi Siew Cheong had always felt inferior and doubted his own ability to help the Master in carrying out her missions. Therefore, his daughter encouraged him to collect donations and explained to him the true significance behind the endeavour, that is to grant others the opportunity to perform kind deeds. He used to store copies of The World of Tzu Chi and a supply of donor receipts in his car as he drove around to collect donations, no matter how little the amount, besides spreading the word on Tzu Chi’s core missions and values wherever he went. He faced hostile glances and unkind rejoinders on his collection rounds, yet he tolerated them all and persisted nonetheless. He persevered for years in persuading a particularly hesitant household to donate to Tzu Chi’s cause; the family finally agreed as they were moved by his sincerity. In addition to recruiting a total of 325 donors, he was actively involved in collecting recyclables from door to door, as he foresaw the possibility of the recyclables being disposed of as trash and causing wastage.
