When I turned four, I was placed under the custody of my uncle by my parents. I moved to Liugui with my uncle and subsequently settled in Taitung. I served as a teacher from the age of 17 until my retirement in 1982 from a teaching career spanning 38 years. My husband, Wang Tian-ding, a school principal, worked in the teaching profession for 48 years. Back in the day, whenever Master Cheng Yen planned to visit Taitung, she would inform Tian-ding in advance. I would clean the house with my fellow volunteers to ensure a comfortable environment for the Master to stay in. I first met the Master in 1961, before she sought refuge in the monastic life. However, we lost contact afterwards. Ten years later, I received news through an acquaintance that a Dharma master was conducting charity work. I offered to help raise funds for the cause, but all I did was carry the donation booklet around as I was at a loss on where to start. One day, I proposed to Tian-ding to initiate a meaningful cause. He readily agreed, so we began recruiting teaching staff from our respective schools as members to support our cause – that was how Tzu Chi started in Taitung. After several months, I decided to travel to Hualien to meet the aforementioned Dharma master in person. Upon arriving at the Jing Si Abode, the nuns, whowere busywith their duties, pointed me in the direction of the farm when I enquired about the Master’s whereabouts. As I approached the lone figure wearing a conical I have led a relatively smooth-sailing life. Yet, I have had my share of trials and tribulations too. I am grateful to Tzu Chi for offering solace to me and my family.
