Y10 English Writing Pang Khe Qin Y10 CFD Title: A Trip To The North Pole The bright red icebreaker stood tall and imposing as it broke through slabs of ice in the freezing waters of the North Pole. The occasional sound of the ship’s blaring horn resonated around the serene wonderland of ice caps, gaining the attention of a group of walruses nearby. As the ship made its way towards its final destination, it created a clearing through the snow white ice, revealing the aquamarine waters underneath and chunks of ice in its wake like a knife slicing through cake. I was one of the lucky few who was qualified to join Professor Smith in his voyage to the North Pole. Now bundled up in endless layers of scarves and winter jackets, I tightened my grip on my steaming mug of hot chocolate which was quickly turning cold in the cool winter air, and peeked out over the railing of the massive ship. The powdery white landscape before my eyes left me speechless and utterly in shock: the humongous stretch of glaciers in the horizon seemed to stretch on for miles to see, and the crystal clear waters reflected the bright blue sky like a mirror. Squinting towards the distance, I could just make out the figures of numerous polar bears and arctic foxes frolicking in the snow, watching the ship with utmost curiosity. Air which I had unconsciously held in escaped my chapped lips shakily from the awe of the spectacular scene in front of me, the warmth of my breath floated in the air like ghosts and the drink in my hands long forgotten. The ringing sound of a bell broke me out of my trance, signalling the start of lunch. I walked across the large deck, past busy workers pushing important equipment around while yelling in a different accent. After pushing open the heavy metal doors with much difficulty, I was met with a gust of warm air. Breathing a sigh of relief, I made my way towards the dining room, where the other researchers and Professor Smith himself would be waiting. As I opened the door to the dining room, I was warmly welcomed into a room filled with the hustle and bustle of cheerful laughter and the clattering of silverware. The delicious aroma of cooking wafted in the air, and I soon found myself to be salivating. Lunch was filled with delicious food and the hearty singing of sailors, but the cherry on the cake was a special announcement from the professor. The icebreaker would be arriving at its destination very soon. Student Work 217
