WHY DO ZEBRAS HAVE STRIPES? Long. long ago in the Safari, a zebra was dozing off under a tree shade. “Ah, what a nice morning it is,” yawned Zebra. “Good morning, Sun!” shouted Zebra to the sky. “Good day, Zebra!” Sun called from above, his rays illuminating as he rose with a smile. Sun gazed at Zebra warmly as he lit up the sky. Suddenly, a stampede of oxen ran past Zebra. “RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!” the oxen screamed hysterically. Zebra shot them a confused look. “Why?” Zebra asked. “HUNTER!” one of the oxen shouted. Sun’s smile faded as he saw a hunter rushing towards his friend. “RUN, ZEBRA!” Sun shouted. Zebra turned around and saw the hunter darting towards him. Zebra ran as fast as his legs could carry him. He ran into a forest filled with lots of trees and logs, hoping he could lose the hunter by running behind one of them. Zebra jumped behind a damp, muddy log with stripy patterns and managed to get out of sight. The hunter continued running forwards. “Phew!” Zebra sighed with relief. He noticed the muddy, stripy patterns on his buddy, and realised it started drying out. The warmth of Sun dried the patterns and Zebra looked shocked. “Wha-What’s happening? I have stripes!” Zebra peeped. He ran to a stream and tried to rinse it off. Nothing worked. “Oh no, Sun dried off the mud,” Zebra said. “I might get used to these stripes.” So, here’s the answer to why Zebras have stripes. Now you know why. - Keira Tan, Y5 CTM – 115 Students' Work - English
